DAY ELEVEN : MAKEUP AND COSMETICS
Pull out your camouflage and share with us the cosmetics that you use to hide the scars of your derma and the sores that haven’t yet healed. What about the spots on your arms, chest, back and legs? Do you modify your outfits when your derma is really bad? If you have trich, what do you do with your hair and accessories to try and appear like there is no damage to your hair?
Here are the goods. Surprisingly, it’s not that much.
On a daily basis, I use the Maybelline Mineral Power Foundation. I bought it because it was on sale, and because I wanted to challenge myself to use something with lighter coverage. I use it as a concealer, on spots and under my eyes. I only really have scars and zits on my forehead, nose, chin and around my hairline, so I’m free to leave most of my face bare. I don’t stress too much about this since most of my scars can pass as freckles, even though I don’t actually have any freckles (oh the joys of deception! haha)
I’m not really faithful to one brand. I used the really heavy Physicians’ Formula concealer for a while but it looked funny since I don’t wear full face makeup (and my skintone is a BITCH to match, I’m so pale), so I decided to stick with something more lightweight.
I use the Neutrogena powder on top of that, and I like it because it’s not too heavy- it adds a little extra coverage, helps the foundation stay, and makes it look like I’m not wearing any makeup. It also blends the foundation into my skin - kind of creates a gradient - it was the lightest color and it’s STILL too dark for me ugh. I wear bronzer too so it doesn’t really matter, but whatever.
In addition, I wear blush, bronzer and eye makeup - mascara, eyeliner, and a little cream highlighter (love Urban Decay!) to keep me from looking tired. Since this post is about dermatillomania, though, I think I’ll hold off on mentioning the brands unless you guys are interested- any takers???
I only use this makeup on my face. The Sally Hansen leg stuff will be used on my legs if I have to show them, I wear it under pantyhose. I try to avoid showing my legs like the plague. It’s getting easier since it will be cooler soon, but I usually either cover them with cotton leggings or pants. Now I have more of an excuse to cover them since I’m under doctors’ orders to not shave my legs, so pantyhose are certainly out of the question.
Any other scars, I don’t bother covering. The only real visible ones apart from those listed above are the ones on my arms, it just looks like I have kp. no big deal. Occasionally there’s one on my chest I’ll dab a little concealer on, but I’m not a boob girl to begin with, so that’s really not a problem.
